Consistency

by Phil Mancini on August 31, 2008

I’ve known several people that no matter how busy or hectic life gets, they always seem to manage to fit in their workout. CrossFit celebrity Greg Amundson was one of these people but I have the distinct advantage of being married to another. It inspires and amazes me when people commit and remain consistent to a health and fitness lifestyle.

That’s not to say that staying consistent is easy because it’s not. If it was easy, then everyone would be at their ideal weight, sporting six-packs, and busting out sub 3 minute “Fran” times. So what makes people who remain consistent different from those who don’t?

I think it boils down to having the choice of making positive decisions every day of our lives. Many times we have responsibilities, stresses and other triggers that can push us off track and cause us to lose focus of what’s really important. Being able to stay focused and consistent with exercise can not only help us with our health, but also make those other tasks less daunting.

Remember that every day we can make positive choices that affect every aspect of our lives and the lives of others. That’s the kind of consistency that makes a difference.

Rest Time

by John Planow on August 30, 2008

Looking to improve your CrossFit times?

For many of us, the key lies not in doing the exercises faster, but in reducing the amount of time we spend resting. Success in many CrossFit workouts (though not all) comes in managing your work and rest intervals; you can’t always blow through a workout without resting. However, a lot of people rest too much during a workout. You have to find the right amount and many of us would be surprised at the small amount of rest with which we can get by.

So, next time you find yourself hunched over, trying to catch your breath, or staring at the evil wall ball, kettlebell, or box, just take a deep breath, count “3-2-1 GO!” and knock out a few more reps.

Focus

80% of success is showing up.  Woody Allen popularized this phrase as a self depricating view of his own success.  While showing up is the first step, starting with the right frame of mind is the most critical element to any level of success.
When undertaking any new goal, there is usually an element of fear [...]

Nutrition

August 28, 2008

I’ve had a couple people recently ask me in passing how to improve their diet.  They didn’t really want a long answer and probably weren’t looking to make a radical change.  This got me thinking about the best advice I could give someone regarding their diet in one minute or less.  It comes down to this:
Moderate how [...]

Variety

Occasionally, in the workout schedules we’ve done, the question has come up, “why are we doing X today? We just did X yesterday.” There’s a short video clip on crossfit.com that explains some of the reasons why. (This video was done by Again Faster. The speaker is Pat Sherwood of CrossFit Virginia Beach.)
The short answer: [...]
